Precision arc welding and destructive testing for 50-ton overhead crane gantry
The client required a robust crane runway system capable of supporting a 50-ton overhead crane under continuous dynamic loading. The primary challenge was ensuring weld integrity across heavy-gauge steel sections while maintaining precise alignment for smooth gantry travel. Our approach combined advanced arc welding techniques with both destructive (macro-etch, bend tests) and non-destructive (ultrasonic, magnetic particle) testing protocols. We developed a custom jig system to hold 40mm thick flanges during multi-pass welding, reducing distortion to under 2mm over 12-meter spans.
All weld cross-sections passed load-bearing capacity tests exceeding 120% of design specifications. Ultrasonic testing revealed zero critical discontinuities across 240 meters of weld seams. The final structure achieved a stress distribution uniformity of 94% under simulated 50-ton load cycles, with measured deflection staying within 1/800 of span length. The project was completed 6 days ahead of schedule, with full certification for industrial use.
